The way my daughter and son see it, this is the kid with no character development, no backstory, no emotional growth, no family, and dialogue one-liners that don’t amount to much.

It’s a common cliché, and it’s very subtle. In our ever-increasing commitment to include diverse characters in novels, we’ve also, at the same time, increased a stereotype ― that black kids (when they’re among an “ensemble cast”) don’t have much going on and aren’t worthy of the spotlight.

In the old days they called this tokenism ― sticking a person of color into the mix for the sake of having a black face among the group. This has its disadvantages. Young readers want to know what’s in the hearts and souls that are behind those faces of color. But when we don’t give these characters the same depth as is allowed the other characters, we perpetuate the stereotype that black teens are lesser people.

some eva moments that were really great so far in my re-watch:

the “i’m home” scene with shinji and misato at the train station with the background chatter about looking after your kids
shinji asking kensuke if his larping (bc that’s what it is) was for actual military training. idk maybe i’m reading too much into this scene, but i think it was trying to potray the contrast between shinji and his peers outside of the whole ‘loneliness’ aspect, and if i’m right then it’s a really good dialogue exchange.
misato being a badass in general this woman is amazing. a lot of 90s anime didn’t have main female characters with this much depth other than for love-interest reasons, and eva does an amazing job considering when it was produced.
the screenwriting and scene layout for shinji’s running away scene, especially the movie theater part that was rly well done
maya being cute
the screenwriting for all the silent rei/gendo interactions
the animation for all the angels
ritsuko talking about the three aspects of her mother after preventing the magi from getting hacked
asuka’s personality being revealed overtime compared to how rei keeps closing up
ummmmm the screenwriting is REALLY GOOD there’s also a lot to derive just from the character’s expressions and the art style is pretty solid
i love how the series stays committed to just a certain group of characters and doesn’t try to dramatically expand them. i mean gainax is already rly good at that, plus all the exposition is subtle and well-done and isn’t thrown in your face. i.e the street signs, street chatter, etc.

now to watch the remaining 13 episodes
